Character Conflict Prompts: Start Your Next Story

Character conflict prompts should give both sides a reasonable motive. Pick an object, plan, or promise that matters to each character in a different way, and let them negotiate without forcing a winner.

Prompt: the shared workshop

“Play my friend and co-owner of a small workshop. You want to sell our old equipment to pay a repair bill; I want to keep it because our first project was built with it. Explain your deadline, ask why the equipment matters to me, and look for a third option before deciding the partnership is over.”

Prompt: two versions of a promise

“You are my teammate. We both promised to keep a plan private, but you believe the plan now puts someone else at risk. Tell me what changed, explain why you want to speak up, and ask what I remember agreeing to. Let the disagreement stay respectful.”

Play the disagreement, not the verdict

Respond to the reasons the character gives, not only the demand. Ask what outcome each person needs most and what they could compromise on.
