Worldbuilding Prompts: Prompt Ideas to Try

Worldbuilding prompts are more useful when they create a setting people can act in. Start with one everyday system—transport, food, school, or local rules—and ask how it affects a character’s decision. That gives the world texture without requiring a full encyclopedia.

Prompt: the town that closes its bridges

“Play a ferrymaster in a river town where every bridge closes at sunset for an old, practical reason. I am a traveler who arrives just before dusk with a delivery for the far bank. Explain the rule, what happens if we miss the crossing, and who might know an exception. Ask what I want to do next.”

Prompt: a market with borrowed names

“You are a vendor in a city where people trade names for one day to avoid being recognized. Tell me how the custom began, what safeguards keep it fair, and why you refuse to trade yours today. Let me ask questions instead of listing every law.”

Build outward from consequences

After introducing a custom, show who benefits and who finds it difficult. Add one institution or neighbor who interprets the rule differently.
