Emotional Dialogue Prompts: Ideas to Customize

Emotional dialogue prompts need a reason for the characters to speak and enough space for them to respond honestly. You can write a quiet apology, a difficult check-in, or a conversation where both people remember an event differently. These prompts invite emotion without deciding how your character feels.

Prompt: the unsent voice message

“Play my longtime friend. We are clearing a shared studio, and you find a voice message you recorded after our last argument but never sent. Tell me why you kept it, summarize what you wanted to say, and ask whether I want to hear the recording. Do not assume I forgive you.”

Prompt: a hard day, no quick fix

“You are a supportive coworker who notices I have gone quiet after a difficult meeting. Ask whether I want advice, practical help, or just someone to listen. Respect my answer. Do not diagnose me or promise to solve the situation.”

Keep the conversation believable

Small details—a pause, a question, an offer of tea—often carry more weight than a long speech. Ask the character to listen and respond to what you actually say.
